CATALYSING CHANGE FOR MISSION DRIVEN SOCIAL ORGANISATIONS

Abhivyakti Media for Development

An organization that worked since 1987 in development of sustainable empowered rural communities to resolve issues around the functioning of village government councils and resolution of social economic issues. The project with Abhivyakti was to help the NPO in the design and development of a strategy roadmap prior to the launch of its new program empowering rural communities across 60 villages in Maharashtra. A SWOT analysis and risk assessment was conducted. An action plan was developed to define the tasks that the organization across all phases of the program lifecycle with KPIs and tollgates. A business plan and organization scorecard was designed as well as KPIs for the program that would allow the NPO to define the program progress including the development of an exit strategy from each village. Toolbox will continue to support the NPO in replicating the program in other districts and states.

Alert India

Alert India, a registered NGO based in Mumbai, is primarily engaged in the field of health promotion and control of diseases such as leprosy, TB, AND HIV-AIDS among underprivileged section of society in urban and rural areas of Maharashtra for more than 3 decades.

ToolBox India collaborated with Alert to develop a primary communication document to function as a single point marketing collateral for collaborations with other NPOS, Implementation of Government projects and corporate partnerships. The Toolbox team's work allowed for the creation of this communication material that would aid the partnerships and fundraising teams at Alert India.

Chikitsa

Chikitsa was registered in 1999 as a Public Charitable Trust, to provide complete healthcare and medicines to the people who cannot afford proper medical services due to poor economic conditions. Base clinic and Satellite clinic are the two clinics approach taken by the organization to reach out to
maximum beneficiaries.

A lack of technological expertise to design a Health Information System that would track the beneficiary details in terms of the type of illness, range of medications, patient footfalls etc. was identified by Toolbox India. The volunteers thus developed a Management Information System (MIS) framework for Chikitsa for their Base and Satellite Clinic which captured all information related to treatments /patient details and well as analyze the treatments on offer.

Masoom

This project examines data provided by Masoom on the functioning of schools and makes strategic recommendations for resource allocation and management as well as capacity building for stakeholders at the senior management level based on a 6 month time frame. This study assumes the validity and relevance of the Grading Tool as a measurement instrument and accordingly suggests recommendations for prioritization of Masoom’s efforts. All analysis and recommendations that have been made are on the basis of data obtained from survey results and interviews with Masoom staff and partnering schools. The evaluation of the night school transformation model helped recalibrate the effort index of Masoom that could create a sustainable program within a specified time frame.

Milaan

The name Milaan comes from the combination of two words: Milan, meaning coming together and Elaan, meaning declaration, which signifies the coming together of young people for a declaration of change. They believe in Educating, Empowering and Enabling. Together they recognize the fact that providing education in itself is not sufficient to bring change. It must be education that not only provides knowledge but also develops the abilities, skills, and attitudes of disadvantaged children and youth so that they become capable of reaching out and grasping the opportunities around them.

In order to effectively present Milaan’s work to various external stakeholders, the ToolBox volunteers worked in creating communication collaterals that presented the programs specific to the organisation, The Girl IconFellowship program, Swarchana and Outreach Program which reflected the program content and delivery, beneficiary impact and future goals.

Mumbai Smiles

Mumbai Smiles was founded in 2005 Spanish journalist and writer Jaume Sanllorente. Mumbai with an objective of providing the basic amenities like health, education, nutrition and counselling support to the underprivileged children of Mumbai. The programs include innovative and sustainable projects to tackle various developmental challenges — promoting livelihoods for income-generation, poverty alleviation, education projects to eradicate illiteracy, and health campaigns to improve community health, combat child malnutrition.

Toolbox teamed up with Mumbai Smiles to design and undertaken an impact assessment of the Life skills Education Program catering mostly to the vulnerable adolescent girls in the age group 12-19 years residing in the slums of Marol in Mumbai. The ToolBox volunteers reviewed the program , defined program outcomes and metrics for measurement to determine the effectiveness of the program on end beneficiaries. Through this study , Mumbai Smiles is able to draw insights into the program impact that can be presented to external stakeholders as well as utilized for internal program review

Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT)

Public Concern for Governance Trust is a registered trust, founded by some caring & committed people having the experience and the expertise to access legal solutions, mobilize public opinion for a larger participation in the cause of good governance to ensure just and transparent implementation of the law.

The need of the moment was to design a program dashboard, case study template to capture the historic success stories of the RTI and Kuch Aur program and envisioning with the team to chalk-out the Roadmap for the next 18 months.Impact would envisage the structuring of the key programs at PCGT including impact articulation, program wise goal definition which will allow the NPO to build its legacy around the mission set for itself. The change management initiated at PCGT by Toolbox would enable the organization towards the attainment of a sustainable model beyond the legacy of the founders.

Tara Mob Creches Pune

Tara Mobile Creches Pune (TMCP) is a non-profit organization, set up in 2007, to ensure that migrant construction worker’s children enjoy the right to safety, healthcare, education, recreation, and participation. They operate centers, or creches, on construction sites in and around Pune. These centers provide a stimulating environment that fosters the importance of good childcare and contributes to the safety and all-round development of the children on the site. A qualified, experienced, and well-trained team of staff members and ‘karyakartas’ (workers), trained in childcare by TMCP, manage the creches.

TMC realized the need to revisit their vision and mission and subsequently wanted to undertake organization development, process standardization and put in place an effective M&E framework. TBXI volunteers undertook the development of a manual for Finance functions of the organization. A finance
manual was created to capture the finance management system of the organization emphasizing on the efficient and effective use of internal resources, best practices, policies and procedures abided by the organization.

Udayan Care

After understanding and reviewing the current reporting content and mechanism and the success indicators at the organization and beneficiary levels, the team felt the necessity to develop a dashboard with decision making descriptors and adopting corrective measures.The dashboard enabled to reach faster decision making, reduce staggering time or delay, improve efficiency and an effective tool to reach out to the donors.

Urmi foundation

Urmi is a niche and innovative NGO working in the special education space to integrate children with developmental disabilities into the mainstream education through provision of resources and policy support. Urmi wanted to reduce its dependence on 2-3 major donors by opening up new avenues to raise funds to facilitate its programs. Toolbox does not generally support fund raising efforts of NPOs, however the innovative nature of the program and the drive of the founder prompted us through our partnership with Tata pro engage volunteers to develop a fund raising plan by analyzing the current donor base and identifying targets and platforms for potential fund raising. We also validated their financial plan for scale up and developed a pitch deck for targeting donors.

Urmi has successfully used the pitch deck and financial plan to raise funds from new institutions.

Utthan

Utthan brings together a group of professional development workers, committed to working with communities towards an India free of inequalities and discrimination with equal opportunities, security, and freedom for all. Utthan's effort to translate this vision into reality is focused on its mission to serve those most vulnerable such as Women, Adivasi communities, Dalits, Minorities and the Poor. Utthan envisages influencing the larger socio-political environment that should enable the desired change.

After a thorough Organizational diagnosis Toolbox team along with Utthan realised the need of designing a communication collateral to capture the essence of the Livelihood Security, Gender Equality, Peach and Justice, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and Institutional Development programs and the impact created by Utthan in the regions of Ahmedabad. A communication document in the form of a brochure capturing all the programs and the related statistics was developed to easy and faster information dissemination and giving a consistent message to the funding partners, other NPO partners, Government bodies, volunteers, employees, and beneficiaries.

Vacha Trust

Vacha’s mission is to focus on issues of women and girls through educational programs, resource creation, research, training, campaigns, networking and advocacy. Vacha’s facilitates 21st century life skills to marginalized adolescents with special focus on girls in the age group of 10 to 18 years of age, living in basti (slums) in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Two core programs of Vacha are Youth Empowerment and Girls Resource Centre which runs in the Community. Sessions, trainings, awareness workshops are extensive part of the program where the feedback mechanism is captured in multiple forms.

There was a realization that Vacha lacked a comprehensive Impact assessment strategy. In absence of a Program Measurement and Tracker system to ensure standardization across all center’s activities. TBXI volunteers deviced a Management Information System (MIS) Tracker as a Beneficiary Mapping tool for Girls Resource Centre and Youth Empowerment program. Design of program measurement and tracking templates assists in analysis of program impact that can be used for fundraising, external communication and better decision making. Additionally, it helps in effective measurement of the employee’s performance, the competencies gap and training required for better delivery of the program.
